OUR HISTORY
SARAH HEINZ HOUSE ASSOCIATION HISTORY TIMELINE
1901
In 1901, Howard Heinz, the son of visionary businessman H.J. Heinz, founded a small boys' club on Pittsburgh's North Side called the Covode House, which would later inspire many as the Sarah Heinz House. Part of the settlement house movement, the Covode House represented hope and opportunity for the community. Howard's unwavering dedication to helping young children began during his college years at Yale, where he was moved by the struggles of boys living on the streets of New Haven, Connecticut.
1903
The Covode House emerged as a vibrant hub for recreational and social activities, specifically designed for boys who were the sons of newly arrived immigrants in Pittsburgh. This welcoming environment offered a variety of engaging programs that fostered friendship and community among the young members. In a progressive move in 1903, the club opened its doors to girls, becoming a pioneering organization that embraced the inclusion of both boys and girls, enriching the social landscape for all its members.
1913
By 1913, the club had achieved remarkable success, ultimately surpassing the limitations of its original space. In response to this growth, a new, striking building was commissioned, serving as a tribute to Howard's beloved mother, Sarah. This architectural gem, still standing proudly at our current location, boasts a captivating brick and stone façade that exudes timeless elegance. Its magnificent stained-glass windows, intricately designed, vividly portray themes of character and virtue, casting colorful patterns of light that dance across the interior, creating an inspiring atmosphere for all who enter.
1921
Heinz House Camp was created to provide urban children with a memorable camping experience amidst the serene beauty of nature. Nestled on approximately 115 sprawling acres in Ellwood City, PA, the camp is beautifully framed by the winding Slippery Rock Creek. This enchanting setting offers many thrilling activities to make every summer unforgettable. Children can delight in a refreshing plunge into the calm waters of the creek, conquer their fears on an exhilarating high ropes course, or embark on peaceful overnight and day hikes through the stunning landscape. With so much adventure and fun awaiting, the camp is a true haven for young explorers eager to connect with nature.
1930
In the 1930s, the Sarah Heinz House emerged as a trailblazer among the National Boys and Girls Clubs of America, marking a vital chapter in its history. This critical connection has persisted through the years and cultivated a rich legacy of support, mentorship, and active community involvement for youth. Through various programs and initiatives, the Sarah Heinz House has played a pivotal role in uplifting and empowering young people, fostering a sense of belonging, and encouraging personal growth within the community.
2007
The demand for more space steadily increased, prompting the decision to expand. A new environmentally green-certified building was thoughtfully constructed and seamlessly linked to the original structure. Completed in 2007, this impressive 75,000-square-foot facility boasts modern amenities, including a cutting-edge gymnasium, a sparkling swimming pool, a vibrant dance studio, and a fully equipped fitness center. Today, this dynamic space is a hub for thousands of youths, offering enriching after-school and summer programs that foster growth, health, and creativity.
2023
In a remarkable revival of its historical significance, Sarah Heinz House embraces its origins by transforming itself into a vibrant hub for the community. This revitalization centers on the organization’s fundamental values and enduring mission, which seeks to inspire individuals of all ages to engage in laughter, pursue knowledge, and develop leadership skills. By fostering an inclusive and nurturing environment, Sarah Heinz House aims to empower everyone to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the community around them.
2024

This exciting partnership has allowed us to broaden our services and programming tailored to adults aged 60 and above.
